What gear are we supposed to be in when driving uphill?
I thought it was a higher gear uphill and a low gear downhill? I took a test that said otherwise….Thanks!
You put it in the gear that keeps the power within the powerband, otherwise you lug the motor and consume more fuel than you should. This causes overheating, pinging and poor detonation which after a LONG time leads to premature crank bearing failure.
Downhill it’s lower numerical gears to keep the rpm’s higher thus using the engine along with the brakes. Higher RPM’s also equal more brake pressure.
One note: When your engine is running in a deceleration with no pressure on the gas pedal your ECM will actually stop spraying the fuel injectors THUS you are using NO fuel to run the brake booster, A/C, and alternator along with the Power Steering pump if it’s run off the engine. Basically it’s free power to run the accessories and reduces your fuel consumption.
