How to get into Brown University if you are dyslexia?

I have just finished my junior year of High school and would really like to go to Brown University, like most people. I am very smart, but the problem is that I am dyslexic, because of this my GPA is only a 3.1 and slowly rising. My sat score is 570 in reading and 520 in math but I am going to take it 3 more times. I also plan to take the ACT in a week.

I went to Brown and graduated in ’03. My husband is brilliant but severely dysgraphic (a situation that is related to dyslexia but effects the ability to write more than to read, to put it in a nutshell). So…I’m really sympathetic to your situation as I understand that intelligence and dyslexia are not mutually exclusive, but I’m also realistic in that I know what you would be expected to endure at Brown. Please read all of this. None of it is meant to hurt your feelings, and for the sake of helping someone else (in my husband’s shoes), I hope you know that I wish you the best.

Here are my suggestions, and most are applicable to all of college, b/c your strategy to get you in anywhere is pretty similar:

IMMEDIATELY:
1) Get involved in a summer activity that makes it look like you are passionate about this cause (dyslexia or a similar disease not getting lumped in with lack of intelligence). Maybe you can work with a summer program that helps kids with dyslexia develop reading skills? A mentorship with a dyslexic child? Even work in an office doing clerical work, so long as the office deals with this issue (a dr’s office or an educational group, for instance).

2) Work your a** off to improve your Math SAT scores; it is difficult to justify your math scores based on dyslexia, especially if you are getting untimed exams. When you hear of dyslexics getting into Brown, it’s most likely lop-sided students who excell in math/science…I knew lots of students there who were great in humanities or in science, but not in both–you need to make sure you look better in one of them.

3) If you haven’t gotten your dr’s and such to get you extra SAT time, you need to do that. You should also get a teacher you are close with to write you a letter, or at least a school counselor, explaining that they see intelligence in you that doesn’t come across in your grades b/c of your dyslexia.

THINGS TO THINK ABOUT, especially in regards to your application essay:

1) Why are you so dead set on Brown? In my 5 years there, and my 3 at Columbia, I have met one person who had a similar “learning disability.” I’m a little concerned that you feel there is more dyslexia at Brown than there is.

2) Why is it the best place for you? If you were to get in, how would you keep up with your classmates so that you would not get poor grades? How would you feel if you were at the bottom of your class? In the humanities, reading loads are intense; in many of the sciences, they are still pretty significant. Many straight A high school students at schools like Brown get depressed in college b/c they end up in the B range or lower (someone of the excellent student body has to). Why is it that you feel you would do better in this super selective/competitive environment than you did in your high school? If your high school is not a top college prep school, you need to work hard at explaining this.

3) Your essay–you need to discuss your dyslexia in your essay, and how you now have the tools and skills to succeed in spite of it, and in spite of your grades (hopefully your poorest grades are earlier in high school). Brown really considers the essay significant, and it is your only forum for explaining your problem, so don’t fail to do so. Be careful, of course, not to come across as complaining or whining–when you talk about difficulties in your essay, you need to explain why you will be able to do better in the future, now, or how the school will help you do better…one legitimate argument I can think of for you is that Brown has no core curriculum, and all classes can be taken pass/fail. Thus, you could say that unlike in high school, you would be able to focus more of your attention on areas you CAN succeed at without being distracted by the stress of, say, graded english classes. I would be careful not to say that you never want to take a reading/writing class again–rather I would emphasize how greatly you would be benefitted by being able to take these classes S/NC (pass/fail), so you can improve your skills while minimizing the stress’s effect on your other coursework.

4) What other schools would be good for you? I guarantee you that you can be happy other places. A 3.1 GPA can get into Brown with a good essay, good SATs, but realize that even with perfect grades and SATs a lot of kids get rejected, so you need to figure out your other options. Mostly, this is a job you should do with your advisor. 2 cents I would put in is to look at other Non-traditional schools…Reed, Marlboro, and Hampshire, etc.
I would strongly suggest Hampshire college in your situation b/c it is part of the 5 college consortium including Smith, Amherst, UMass, and Mt. Holyoke–some of the best schools in the country will be at your disposal, and yet you only have to get into Hampshire, which is much more individualized and concerned with situations like your own. Additionally, if you take classes at Amherst (top ranked liberal arts school) and do well, you would have an excellent basis for transfer your sophomore year, if you wanted to move to a different school.
